Macklemore |
With a lot of success comes a lot of pressure.
And after Macklemore had such an incredible year in 2014, he admitted he fell off the wagon a little bit. The recovering addict and his musical partner, Ryan Lewis, had won several awards and their songs were dominating the charts.
And after Macklemore had such an incredible year in 2014, he admitted he fell off the wagon a little bit. The recovering addict and his musical partner, Ryan Lewis, had won several awards and their songs were dominating the charts.
But, the 32-year-old explained that the attention and new, crazy lifestyle caused him to recently relapse and get back into drugs, specifically marijuana and pills:
"I held it together for a while. But, eventually, I stopped going to my 12-step meetings. I was burnt out. I was super-stressed. We weren't sleeping — doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country. In terms of the media I was getting put into a box that I never saw for myself. The pressure and the fame — everything. All the clichés, man — like not being able to walk around, having no privacy, and from this TV appearance to this TV appearance, and the criticism, and the lack of connection, and the lack of meetings — all of that put into one pie was just…I just wanted to escape."
But one day, his fiancée, Tricia Davis, found some drugs he had been hiding, which forced him to press pause on his using habits, at least for a little while. But unfortunately, he explained, it didn't last very long:
"I sat in a car, a hot boxed car — I thought that was a good idea — and got high. And then the next day it was like, ‘What's up with the weed?' And once I'm there, it's over."
As much as he wanted to stop, the rapper revealed he just couldn't convince himself to quit:
"You know, like, Monday, I'ma stop…. OK. Tuesday, I'ma stop…. OK, f—k it, I might as well go on to the weekend. Sunday, I'm done. But after this bag of weed…"
It even began to invade his professional life:
"I'm in meetings with management with sunglasses on and I'm rolling around like a 15-year-old trying not to get caught smoking weed in my car. Straight up, driving all around here, like I was 15 years ago. Same sh*t. I felt so dumb. I felt like I'm just wasting time. What am I escaping here?"
But when Tricia told him she was expecting a child, it was exactly the motivation he needed to get himself back on track:
"I've been trying to grow up this year. Since I heard that Tricia was pregnant, I was like, ‘I need to grow up right now.'"
He added that he's returned to his 12-step meetings, and that being sober has helped him make new music:
"The sobriety was the wake-up call that I needed. And, as it always works, the minute that I start actively seeking recovery — not just sobriety, but recovery — music is there. It always has been. Songs write themselves. My work ethic turns off-to-on in a second and I get happy again. I get grateful again."
We're really glad Macklemore has been able to get the help he needs, and seems to be in a better place now! Besides, we can't wait to hear this new music he's talking about!
